Market Review for the week ended August 29th, 2025
The Nigerian stock market closed negative for the week despite recording a 0.31% gain in August. The NGX All-Share Index (NGX-ASI) declined by 0.50% week-on-week, closing at 140,295.50 points compared to 141,004.14 points in the prior week. Consequently, the year-to-date (YtD) return moderated to 36.31%. Similarly, market capitalization fell by 0.49%, settling at ₦88.77 trillion from ₦89.21 trillion in the previous week.
A total turnover of 3.20 billion shares valued at ₦85.40 billion in 142,477 deals was recorded on the NGX during the week. This represented a slowdown from the previous week’s performance of 4.77 billion shares valued at ₦107.43 billion in 152,965 deals, translating to declines of 32.98%, 20.50%, and 6.86% in volume, value, and number of deals, respectively. Sectoral performance was broadly negative across the tracked indices. The NGX Banking Index fell by 1.21%, the NGX Industrial Goods Index dipped by 0.36%, the NGX Oil and Gas Index declined by 0.18%, the NGX Insurance Index shed 1.02%, while the NGX Consumer Goods Index lost 0.89%.
FCMB dominated the trading chart by volume, while GTCO led by value, though both recorded declines of 1.36% and 2.13% WoW, respectively. Despite the overall bearish sentiment in the market, several stocks posted impressive gains. MCNICHOLS (+18.75%), NEM (+17.29%), BERGER (+15.31%), WAPIC (+12.77%), and LEARNAFRICA (+11.43%) topped the gainers’ list. On the flip side, NSLTECH emerged as the week’s worst performer, shedding 22.73% WoW.
