Market Review for the week ended September 4th, 2025

The market closed the first trading week of September on a negative note, with only four trading sessions held as the Federal Government declared Friday, September 5, 2025, a public holiday to mark the Eid el-Maulud celebration. The NGX All-Share Index (NGX-ASI) declined by 0.94% week-on-week, closing at 138,980.01 points compared to 140,295.50 points in the previous week, as investors engaged in profit-taking activities. Consequently, the year-to-date (YtD) return moderated to 36.03%. In tandem, the market capitalization shed 0.94%, settling at ₦87.94 trillion, down from ₦88.77 trillion recorded the prior week.

A total turnover of 3.12 billion shares valued at ₦90.30 billion in 118,018 deals was recorded on the NGX during the week. This marked a slowdown compared to the previous week’s 3.20 billion shares in 142,477 deals, representing declines of 2.50% in volume and 17.17% in deals, while value appreciated by 5.73%, up from ₦85.40 billion. Sectoral performance was broadly negative across the tracked indices: the NGX Banking Index fell by 1.52%, the NGX Industrial Goods Index dipped by 2.08%, the NGX Oil & Gas Index declined by 0.77%, the NGX Insurance Index shed 0.36%, while the NGX Consumer Goods Index lost 1.18%.

SOVRENINS dominated the trading chart by volume, while ARADEL led by value, recording WoW gains of 14.23% and 0.24%, respectively. Despite the overall bearish sentiment in the market, several equities delivered notable performances. SOVRENINS (+14.23%), NSLTECH (+12.94%), CORNERST (+12.36%), NCR (+9.96%), and SCOA (+9.83%) topped the gainers’ list. Conversely, DAARCOMM emerged as the week’s worst performer, declining by 21.10% WoW.
