How to Check Unclaimed Dividend
Nestle, Dangote Cement, 7 Others Accounted for N20.9bn Unclaimed Dividend in 2022
1 Check if you have an unclaimed dividend
The foremost task at hand is to determine if you or any of your relatives have any unclaimed dividends. This can be achieved through your stockbroker or by using the SEC database, which is accessible for non-mandated accounts at www.sec.gov.ng.
By entering your name in the search box, the online portal can help you ascertain if you have any unclaimed dividends and present a list of companies in which you have an outstanding dividend.
2 Familiarize yourself with your registrar(s)
Registrars are responsible for managing all shareholder-related matters on behalf of companies. These issues include dividends, public offerings, and share certificates. It is evident that to receive your dividend payment, you must know your registrar(s).
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has 18 registrars who manage all companies listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), meaning that a registrar may have multiple firms to manage, with over 160 companies listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Additionally, depending on the companies in which you invested, your data may be held by multiple registrars.
3 Complete a share transfer document
Now that you know your registrar, you can obtain a share transfer form from your stockbroker and proceed to process your unpaid dividends for a fee, which may be a percentage of the value of your dividend.
If you are worried about the cost, you can contact your registrar to have your dividends processed. This method, while saving you money, may take longer to process your dividends.
4 Complete your e-dividend registration process
It is critical to complete your e-dividend registration and address any outstanding issues once and for all. Yes! It is a one-time process created to tackle the issue of unpaid dividends.
This means that you will not have to go through the process again after receiving a dividend. When any company in which you have holdings pays a dividend, your registrar(s) will automatically deposit it into your bank account.
Once you have identified your registrar(s), go to their websites on the SEC website to get their e-dividend mandate forms and fill them out with the appropriate information. You will need to provide crucial details such as your name, Bank Verification Number, account number, email, and so on.
5. Visit your bank
After that, take a completed and signed copy of the e-dividend mandate form to your bank. It is recommended that you use only one bank instead of multiple banks to keep track of dividend payments – for signature.
6. Return the signed e-dividend mandate form to your stockbroker
Finally, return the duly signed e-dividend mandate form to your broker or registrar so that they can complete the process on your behalf.
While this ensures that your subsequent dividends are directly paid into your bank account, you can inquire about the status of your unpaid dividends after completing the necessary procedures and how to retrieve them.
