Market Review for the week ended 16th January, 2026

The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) All-Share Index (ASI) opened the week on a bullish note, advancing by 2.36% week-on-week to close at 166,129.5 points, up from 162,298.08 points in the prior week. This performance ensured a positive year-to-date (YTD) return of 6.76%. Similarly, market capitalisation closed higher,rising by 2.53% to ₦106.3 trillion, compared with ₦103.7trillion recorded in the previous week.

Trading activity on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) strengthened markedly during the week, with total turnover reaching 4.62 billion shares valued at ₦130.9 billion, executed across 263,576 deals. This reflects a (40.92%) week-on-week fall in volume, a (2.65%) fall in value, and an 74.79% rise in deal count, compared with 7.821 billion shares valued at ₦134.471 billion traded across 150,799 deals in the preceding week.

Sectoral performance was broadly positive across tracked indices. The NGX Oil & Gas Index led gains, advancing 5.71%, followed by the NGX Banking Index (+3.45%), Consumer Goods Index (+1.59%),Insurance Index (+1.44%), and Industrial Goods Index (+0.67%).

Eighty (80) equities appreciated during the week, compared with Seventy – three (73) gainers recorded in the previous week. NCR (60.79%), SCOA (+59.36), DEAPCAP (+48.67%), JAIZBANK (+45.73%), and OMATEK (+38.28%) topped the gainers’ chart. Conversely, seventeen (17) equities depreciated, lower than the twenty three (23) decliners recorded in the prior week. IKEJAHOTEL emerged as the worst-performing stock, shedding 12.38% week-on-week (WoW).
